Fall, winter training calendar

Department of Human Resources Management

The Department of Human Resources Management presents the fall, winter training schedule. An array of workshops and seminars to address individual professional development skills as well as support the accomplishment of departmental organizational goals are being offered.

Career, Professional Enhancement 

How to Hire The Right Person 
Sept. 25
Selecting the right person for the job is the beginning of a productive employment relationship. This course provides the hiring official with essential building blocks for a good hiring decision. The objective of the course is to provide the hiring official with an overview of legal responsibilities, a demonstration of the behavioral interview technique, and a systematic approach for assessing applicant information.

Medical Terminology II 
Oct. 29 - Dec. 17
Medical Terminology II is designed to follow Medical Terminology I and is a more detailed study of medical terms and their meanings. Classes meet twice a week for one hour each on Tuesdays and Thursdays for six weeks. Recommended prerequisites: Medical Terminology I and textbook from Medical Terminology I.
Fees: $60 per participant per course or $80 for any participant desiring to attend both Medical Terminology I and II. Fees include Textbook and Certificates

Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) 
Oct. 16
Whom does this federal law protect? Does leave granted under FMLA run concurrently with existing leave programs such as sick/annual, holiday leave, workers' compensation, etc.? The answers to these questions and other details about FMLA will be discussed.

University Procurement Policies and Procedures 
Nov. 20
Learn how to use the purchasing system at MUSC to obtain what you need, when you need it, and at a competitive price while remaining in compliance with state laws and proper accounting procedures. You will learn what forms to use andhow to complete them.

Managing with Spirit and Wisdom 
Oct.2
 “Any company that wants to be excellent must have the full involvement and support of everyone in the organization” according to Tom Peters, author of “In Search of Excellence.” 

This seminar examines the role of trustworthiness, unity, respect, justice, service, and humility in creating a work environment that supports continuous quality improvement.

Word 97—Level I 
Nov. 6, Jan. 14, March 6, May 6
This workshop will familiarize participants with the basics of Word. Recommended prerequisites: PC Basics, Windows 95 Basics, and Windows 95 File Management 
Fee: $60 per participant 

Word 97—Level II 
Oct. 1, Dec. 12, Feb. 12, April 2, June 11
This workshop teaches participants to create a sample table, format the table, and insert graphic images and text boxes in documents. Recommended prerequisites: PC Basics, Windows 95 Basics, Windows 95 File Management and Word 97—Level I 
Fee: $60 per participant

Excel 97—Level II 
Oct. 17, Dec. 5, Feb. 4, April 10, June 3
This workshop will introduce the concept of Excel charting. Recommended prerequisites: PC Basics, Windows 95 File Management and Excel 97—Level I
Fee: $60 per participant

Excel 97—Level III 
Sept. 24, Nov. 21, Jan. 28, March 19, May 22
This workshop continues where Excel 97—Level II left off. Participants will be shown how to make spreadsheets more user friendly and more secure. Recommended prerequisites: Windows 95 Basics, Windows 95 File Management, Excel 97—Level I, and Excel 97 Level II 
Fee: $60 per participant

Access 97—Level II
Oct. 23, Dec. 11, Feb. 20, April 22, June 18
This workshop takes participants from Access 97 - Level I to normalizing a table; designing and developing table relationships; editing and validating data in tables; working with calculations in a query; creating forms that contain sub-forms; and customizing reports created by the Report Wizard. Recommended prerequisites: Windows 95 Basics, and Access 97 - Level I.
Fee: $60 per participant

Access 97—Level III 
Sept. 26, Nov. 21, Jan. 30, March 27, May 28
This workshop allows participants to broaden their Access 97 knowledge by creating parameter and action queries, creating macros and use of command buttons on documents. Recommended prerequisites: Windows 95, Access 97 - Level I and Access 97 - Level II. 
Fee: $60 per participant

PowerPoint 97 - Level II
Oct. 9, Dec. 3, Feb. 6, April 16, June 19
This workshop takes participants from PowerPoint Level I to creating, editing, and enhancing a table; aligning and rotating flow chart objects, and working the Internet and hyperlinks. Recommended prerequisites: PC Basics, Windows 95 Basics, and PowerPoint Level I.
