Ambulatory Care recognizes award winners

Each quarter, Ambulatory Care Services recognizes selected employees who demonstrate the organization’s values of Accountability, Respect, Excellence, and Adaptability. Staff members who have received an “Applause for Caring” card during the quarter are automatically eligible for the AREA Award.

Second quarter AREA Award recipients are:

  • Phyllis Connor, patient registration representative, Hollings Cancer Center
  • Carol Hipple, R.N., clinical nurse coordinator, Hollings Cancer Center
  • Alvin Taylor, cast technician, Pediatric Orthopaedics and Med/Surg Clinics
  • Ron Treiber, maintenance foreman, Rutledge Tower
Connor  was nominated by a patient because she “has offered support to me so many times since I began going to Hollings. We live a distance out of town, and she tries to arrange my appointments so I won’t have to make so many trips. She is exceptional in juggling schedules.  She is an exceptional person!”  Connor was also nominated by a physician who stated that “she is continually pleasant and has a helpful attitude–demonstrating concern and compassion.”

Hipple was nominated by a fellow employee who noted how “she went above and beyond to help both patient and coworkers” in a situation that involved a very sick patient with a very long wait to be admitted to the hospital from the clinic.  She even assisted housekeeping to expedite the process so the patient and family could be comfortable.

Alvin Taylor, an AREA award recipient, accepts his award. With Taylor are co-workers Barbara Whitnack, from left, Dr. Richard Gross, Dr. Jeffrey Conrad, Dr. Jay Merritt, Maria Doerger, Marie Gardner, June Darby and Kathy Sellers.

Taylor was nominated by the mother of one of his patients.  She noted that “Mr. Taylor is an exemplary member of your orthopedic staff.  With kindness and efficiency, he gave my son commendable care.  He took the time to answer my son’s questions and concerns, but more than that he was sensitive and compassionate. . . .”

Treiber was nominated by a manager, an administrative assistant, and an employee of the Children’s Hospital. Among other attributes, Treiber is noted to be “helpful, and works for a win-win situation.” He is also known for always stopping or arranging to help someone else, despite his busy schedule. It is also noted that he is good-natured and has an excellent work ethic.

The Ambulatory Care Prize Patrol surprised each of these individuals in his/her practice setting on Aug. 13. Each recipient received an AREA Award lapel pin, a framed certificate, a “Be My Guest” dining card in the amount of $50 and a cake to share with his/her coworkers.
