New chair, new vision for pharmacy practice

The College of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmacy Practice has selected John A. Bosso, Pharm.D., as its new chairman. Bosso is also the incoming president of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.

Dr. John A. Bosso

Detailing his plans for the future, Bosso would like his department’s faculty—and the university as a whole—to continue  increasing its commitment to scholarship.

Although the physical practice of pharmacy is obviously essential, Bosso believes that a continuous commitment to learning and scholarship is just as important.

“The discovery of new knowledge is part of our academic mission,” he said. “There’s more to our practice than just taking pills out of a large bottle and putting them into a smaller one.”

He feels confident that the Department of Pharmacy Practice can make such academic progress, based on the diversity of its faculty.

“The College of Pharmacy’s faculty is really its biggest asset,” Bosso said. “We’ve got such a variety of experience, from people just coming out of their residency programs to what I’d call research ‘all-stars.’ It’s an exciting time to be in academic pharmacy.”

Bosso also believes in learning through a coordinated approach, and said a strong college should be thoroughly integrated with others around it.

“Recommendations from the Institute of Medicine suggest that the most effective health sciences students are trained together,” he said. By working together at an educational level, he added, the students are more prepared to work with others at a professional level.

Bosso also views MUSC’s work with the University of South Carolina as a chance for improvement through cooperation. Although the status of any collaboration is still unclear, he maintains an optimistic outlook.

“I think, regardless of what happens, the College of Pharmacy and the Department of Pharmacy Practice will still be here, as strong as we were before,” he said, pausing a moment before adding, “Maybe even better.”
