Hebert named ‘Eminent Scientist of the Year’

James Hebert, Sc.D., associate director for cancer prevention and control at the Hollings Cancer Center and a University of South Carolina professor of epidemiology and biostatistics, has been named Eminent Scientist of the Year 2004.

The award, presented Oct. 22 at a meeting of the South Carolina Cancer Alliance, is from the International Research Promotion Council (IRPC), an organization based in India.

The IRPC annually presents the World Scientists Forum International Awards to honor scientists whose cancer research has had an impact on the lives and health of people throughout the world.

“James Hebert is one of the leading epidemiologists in the world,” said Dr. Sivathanu Jaimony, IRPC director.  “He has been named Eminent Scientist of the Year 2004 for his outstanding contributions in the field of cancer epidemiology and oncology research.”

A nutritional epidemiologist, Hebert has devoted himself to studies on the role of diet in cancer and cardiovascular disease.  His work has been conducted in a number of different settings, including the United States and India.

Hebert’s research in South Carolina includes several studies on the high rates of cancer among minorities.  Last year, Hebert was selected to develop and lead a statewide cancer control and prevention program, a collaboration between USC and MUSC based in the Hollings Cancer Center. Hebert also is chair of the Research Task Force of the South Carolina Cancer Alliance.

“Throughout his career, Hebert has advocated for a very expansive view that very much includes an international perspective on local, regional and national problems,” Jaimony said. “His work in India and Africa will continue to be central to the overall research mission.”

Hebert’s nomination for the award was made by the International Academic Council of Austral-Asian Journal of Cancer, which comprises academicians and scientists throughout the world and provides an international scientific forum through which scientists and physicians promote anti-cancer activities; collaborate on cancer research, training and technology; and conduct multi-center cancer studies and clinical trials.
