MUSC/Clemson Bioengineering holds lecture

The Department of Bioengineering at Clemson University and the Clemson/MUSC Bioengineering Program were hosts to the 21st Annual Hunter Honors Lecture at MUSC Dec. 6.

From left are Drs. David Mooney, Martine LaBerge, chair of the Department of Bioengineering at Clemson and Clemson director of the Clemson/MUSC Bioengineering Program, and Dr. Daniel Knapp.

This event featured guest speaker, David Mooney, Ph.D., the Gordon McKay Professor of Bioengineering, Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University.  Mooney presented a seminar on Cell Interactive Polymers for Tissue Regeneration, which was followed by a poster session and reception featuring research by the bioengineering graduate students at Clemson and MUSC.

Mooney was also awarded a plaque for his contribution to the Hunter Honors Lecture series.

Daniel R. Knapp, Ph.D., Department of Cell and Molecular Pharmacology, was also recognized at the Hunter Honors Lecture and was presented with the Samuel F. Hulbert Award.

The faculty of the Bioengineering Department at Clemson annually presents the Samuel F. Hulbert Award to honor an individual who has made significant contributions to the mission and goals of the department. This award is named for the founder and first administrator of the Bioengineering Department, and is presented every year at the Hunter Honors Lecture.

Knapp holds an Adjunct Professorship with the Department of Bioengineering at Clemson and is the MUSC director of the Clemson/MUSC Bioengineering Program and director of the MUSC Proteomics Center.

The Clemson/MUSC Bioengineering Program, which was initiated in 2003, was developed to enhance the research and training programs at both universities.  Currently, two Clemson faculty members and 12 graduate students occupy space on the campus of the MUSC. More information about the program can be found at http://www.musc.edu/bioengineering/.
