Basic ICD-9-CM, CPT-4 Coding classes to begin Jan. 10

A non-credit course entitled, “Basic ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 Coding Class,” will be held from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday beginning Jan. 10.

The eight-week course is designed to provide an introduction to the basic principles of ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding.

The ICD-9-CM coding provides an introduction to the basic principles and guidelines for assigning diagnostic and inpatient procedure codes. This class will teach the format and significance of the three volumes of the ICD-9-CM, demonstrate knowledge of ICD-9-CM convention, apply the principles and guidelines for ICD-9-CM coding, and assign the correct diagnosis and procedure codes with ICD-9-CM.

CPT-4 is a coding system used in every physician’s office and ambulatory care setting. The CPT-4 class will introduce participants to the CPT-4 coding book and coding guidelines.

Participants will learn how to correctly apply the CPT-4 codes to the patient’s record.  If your office has a CPT-4 book and ICD-9-CM books that you may borrow,  bring them with you to class.

All the classes will be held in room 803 of Harborview Office Tower. Register today to reserve your space in this popular class!

The instructor for the classes will be Christine Lewis, manager, MUSC Hospital Authority Health Information Services. Participants may pay the $100 fee with an IIT, money order or cashier's check. Registration is available online at http://www.musc.edu/hrm/training/MURegistration_oncampus.htm.
