MUSC brings radiation therapy to Georgetown hospital

MUSC is providing radiation therapy services to the Georgetown Hospital System’s new Cancer Treatment Center, which openedFeb 10.

The addition of this service, combined with the hospital system’s existing chemotherapy services, means that local residents have the opportunity to receive the most common cancer therapy services without leaving the area.

The university placed a radiation oncologist and a radiation physicist full-time at the Georgetown facility.  In addition, MUSC radiology residents will rotate through the practice.

Patients from the Georgetown area have the benefit not only of the Medical University health care specialists physically on the site, but a telecommunications system also will link the Georgetown facility with a wide variety of medical backup and consultation resources from MUSC's Hollings Cancer Center.

In addition, physicians at the Hollings Cancer Center are involved in numerous clinical research projects, which offer cancer patients access to therapies before they are generally available.

The cooperative agreement with the Georgetown facility will provide opportunities for participation in the clinical research trials to residents of the Georgetown area.

MUSC radiology residents have the opportunity to gain experience in a community-based center.

“Many of our residents will leave the academic medicine setting to practice in a community setting,” said Joseph M. Jenrette III, M.D., interim chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at MUSC.

The Georgetown facility is a freestanding center similar to the environment in which many will ultimately practice.
