Student receives Palmetto Gold Scholarship

Alexandra Snyder has received the Palmetto Gold Scholarship from the South Carolina Nurses Foundation.

Snyder completed her first semester of coursework in the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program and is a dean’s list student. According to Mardi Long, director of student and alumni relations, “Within a few weeks of the fall semester, the faculty identified Alexandra as a student who displayed caring and commitment to patients, families, and colleagues, demonstrated leadership, and promoted the profession of nursing in a positive way.”

Snyder is a graduate of Wake Forest University. She earned a bachelor's degree in science in May, double-majoring in biology and exercise science. She was on the dean’s list each semester and studied abroad one semester at the University of Queensland in Australia. She is also athletic and has participated in soccer, flag football, volleyball, basketball, water polo, and softball. Her compassion and service to others is evidenced by her volunteer experiences at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Shriner’s Hospital, Girl Scout Badge Workshops, Saturday Science Pen-Pals, and Hands On Greenville Community Service Organization.

For three summers during college, Snyder worked as an anesthesia technician in the operating rooms at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

In her essay for admission to the College of Nursing, she wrote, “I have seen a gamut of situations, from life-ending emergencies and traumas to miraculous life-saving events. I was most impressed with the care and patient interaction exhibited by the nurse anesthetists and am confident that this is the education and professional experience I want for myself.”

In a letter of support for the scholarship, College of Nursing dean Gail Stuart wrote, “Ms. Snyder is a motivated student who takes her academic training seriously. She is mature, works well in groups, and possesses leadership abilities. She has a pleasant demeanor and consistently handles multiple tasks with detail and reliability. She is a member of the Student Nurses Association and was selected as an alternate for the College of Nursing Honor Council.”
