South Carolina’s virtual library adds access to Science

by Laura Cousineau and Teri Lynn Herbert
MUSC Library
The MUSC Library provides access to the Digital Information for South Carolina USers(DISCUS) databases. DISCUS, funded by the South Carolina General Assembly, ensures equity of access to essential information and learning resources.

Many DISCUS databases, such as Custom Newspapers, Grolier Encyclopedia and Biography Resource Center (Who’s Who)  are entirely full text. Others, such as Health and Wellness Resource Center, General Reference Center and Health Reference Center are mostly full text.

The more academic databases—Expanded Academic ASAP, LegalTrac, Business and Company Profile, InfoTrac OneFile—have a mix of full text and citations. These databases are found under the Journal Article Indexes or Other Databases links on the MUSC Library Web.

One of the journals available through DISCUS is Science. Non-AAAS members can access the articles in the journal Science in either the Expanded Academic ASAP database or the InfoTrac OneFile database. The text and graphics of articles from January 1983 through February 2003 (a rolling file) are free to read and download.

Due to the AAAS embargo (to non-members), only articles more than a year old are full text. Science and all DISCUS databases are available on campus, and remotely by logging in with an MUSC Network Account.
