Hawes named president-elect of ASGE

At its annual meeting in New Orleans, May 15 through 19, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) con-firmed Robert H. Hawes, M.D., as its president-elect.

The ASGE is the premier professional organization in the world for gastroenterologists performing endo-scopic procedures, with more than 8,000 members.

Hawes has been professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine, at MUSC for 10 years and is a key member of the Digestive Disease Center.

He grew up in Indiana and joined the faculty at the University of Indiana (at Indianapolis) in 1984. He spent a year (1985-1986) of additional training at the Middlesex Hospital in London with Peter Cotton, M.D., now director of MUSC’s Digestive Disease Center. He then returned to Indiana and became an important member of an internationally recognized team of practitioners and innovators in gastro-intestinal endoscopy.

At MUSC, Hawes has been a powerhouse in clinical care, clinical research, and education, Cotton said. “He is particularly involved in the development of exciting new tech-nologies that increasingly cross the traditional borders between medicine and surgery.”

Hawes is widely respected through-out the world as a leading expert in advanced endoscopic techniques, particularly Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS).

Cotton describes Hawes' interest in the quality of endoscopic services as “passionate.” One of his stated goals for the ASGE presidency is to better understand, teach, and assess endoscopic excellence.

“This is a major honor for Rob Hawes and for MUSC, and richly deserved,” Cotton said.
