Governor honors medical coding profession with proclamation

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford proclaimed May 20 as Professional Medical Coders Day.

The proclamation stated, “Whereas, professional medical coders provide invaluable support to physicians, clinics, hospitals, and patients; and whereas codes exist for all type of services, treatment, and procedures provided in a medical setting; and whereas in addition to communicating effectively with members of the medical community, medical coders read physicians’ reports, determine the reason  each service was rendered, and correctly assign procedural, diagnosis, and supply codes; and by submitting the proper documentation to insurance companies and federal agencies, medical coders help their employers succeed financially and comply with various regulations.”

The UMA Compliance Department and the UMA Coding, Reimbursement and Charge Capture Department thanked their professional coders by presenting them with a gift and a copy of the governor’s proclamation. Patricia McKenzie and Suzanne Collins from the UMA Compliance Department made the announcement about Professional Medical Coders Day at the monthly Coder’s Proficiency Training.

The Proficiency Training classes provide coders with education on a variety of coding and clinical issues.  The attendees were very excited about the news and were thrilled to be recognized for their hard work and dedication to the profession.

“UMA is fortunate to have such a talented staff of medical coders. It is a pleasure to work with these dedicated and enthusiastic employees. We rely on them every day to ensure we are compliant with billing guidelines and obtain accurate reimbursement,” said Julie Acker, UMA director of compliance.

Connie Elrod, associate director of OR coding also participated by distributing a gift and copy of the proclamation.

“It’s nice to be recognized for our work and effort,” said Linda Hill, reimbursement coordinator, Department of Pediatrics.
