Meet...Carol

Name: Dorothy Carol Hipple.

Department: Hollings Cancer Center.

How long at MUSC: 4 1/2 years, but I also worked at MUSC from 1990-1994.

City you were born: Roanoke, Va.

Family: My husband, “Hunk,” a chief petty officer in the Navy, and son Mantz, 5.

Favorite TV show: I am afraid to say I am a CSI fan.

Ingredient you must have in your refrigerator: Cheese and eggs.

Pet peeve: People who complain about another's shortcomings or problem behavior yet not discuss it with the person in question. A person cannot correct or improve if he/she doesn't know the problem exists.

Where did you get your nursing degree: Roanoke Memorial School of  Professional Nursing in Roanoke, Va.

What inspired you to go into nursing: A great need to help others and make a difference. I had major surgery at the age of 16, and the nurses made a great impression on me. Only after I decided to become a nurse  did I discover that nursing was quite a heritage in my family.

Biggest challenge: Trying to get my patients the medications and services they need without throwing them into profound debt.

Words of advice: “You will make mistakes in life...learn from them and move on.” My father said this when I left home for nursing school, and it has been the best advice I ever received.
