Quarterly AREA Award winners recognized

Each quarter, Ambulatory Care Services recognizes outstanding employees who demonstrate the organization’s values of Accountability, Respect, Excellence, and Adaptability (AREA).

Staff members who received an Applause for Caring card or were applauded on the Patient Satisfaction Survey during the quarter are automatically eligible for the AREA Award.

First quarter 2004 AREA Award recipients are: Deborah B. Adams, R.N., Family Medicine; Marilyn Y. Jenkins, patient registration representative, Rutledge Tower; Cindy Kramer, R.N., Hollings Cancer Center; and Sonja Memminger, patient registration representative, Pediatric Primary Care.

  • Adams was nominated by an employee for going to a patient’s home to pick up a lab specimen. The patient did not have the transportation or finances to return to the clinic. Adams went the extra mile to meet the patient’s needs.
  • Jenkins was nominated by two patients. “She made me feel better. She is very caring and understanding  and does such a great job that I don’t have enough words to describe her. She is a blessing in my life and has been very kind to me.” “At 1 p.m. on March 3, I arrived at the appointment desk to be informed that my appointment was at 9:15 a.m. My doctor was no longer at the Rutledge Tower office. Ms. Jenkins went out of her way, calling various areas and numbers until she located my doctor. She explained the situation to the receptionist at Hollings Cancer Center, where they quickly arranged for him to see me. Ms. Jenkins was very helpful and pleasant the whole time. I’m a registered nurse  at another hospital and took  the day off for the appointment. She saved the day. An extra applause for Ms. Jenkins for going the extra mile to provide excellent customer service.”
  • Kramer was nominated by a co-worker. “Cindy stayed over one evening to assist me with a patient who needed chemotherapy and had not been scheduled through infusion. The infusion nurse was gone. Day treatment was leaving, and Cindy stayed to set up the patient and do the safety checks with me prior to administration.  She showed great concern for both me and the patient.  It saved the patient a two-hour return trip. She deserves an AREA Award!”
  • Memminger was nominated by a co-worker for the way she “displays great caring for the Peds Primary Care staff. She communicates via e-mail monthly recognition of birthdays/special events, which are celebrated at a pot-luck lunch. She is always inclusive of clinical staff, registration staff, the pediatric nurse practitioners, and the attendings and support staff. She voluntarily provides coordination of these gatherings, which promote team building.”

The Ambulatory Care Prize Patrol surprised each of these individuals in her practice setting. Each recipient received an AREA Award badge holder, a framed certificate, a $50 Be My Guest dining card, and a cake to share with co-workers.
