COM shines in NIH funding comparison 

Evidence of MUSC’s continuing climb in rankings among the nation’s academic medical centers was released by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in its funding comparisons of the nation’s 126 medical schools for FY 2003.

During the five-year period from FY 1998 to FY 2003, total NIH support to all College of Medicine departments has moved from 58th to 48th place. Total NIH funding to the college during the period increased from $31 million to  $78.1 million. 

In addition to total NIH funding to the nation’s medical colleges, the report analyzed funding information by department within the colleges. 

MUSC College of Medicine departments ranked in the nation's top 20 include:

  • Anatomy and Cell Biology, 15th, with $8.6 million in funding
  • Biostatistics, 6th, $2.2 million in funding
  • Ophthalmology, 10th, $4.9 million in funding
  • Otolaryngology, 12th, $2.3 million in funding
  • Psychiatry, 20th, $14.2 million in funding
MUSC College of Medicine departments ranked in the nation's top 50 include:
  • Biochemistry, 36th, $5.6 million in funding
  • Internal Medicine, 47th, $16.7 million in funding
  • Neurology, 48th, $2.1 million in funding
  • Pediatrics, 45th, $3.7 million in funding
  • Physiology, 29th, $6.4 million in funding

Cumulative research awards for the entire university for FY 2003 totaled $151.2 million. This includes NIH awards to all of MUSC’s colleges and research support from South Carolina corporations and foundations.
