To Medical Center Employees:
Fiscal Year 2003-2004 has been another exciting and challenging year. As we close out the year, now is a good time to reflect on some of our accomplishments.

MUSC was recognized again this year by Solucient as one of the top 100 cardiovascular hospitals in the nation. Child Magazine ranked he Children’s Hospital as the top in the southeast (this ranking covers a two year period) and U. S. News and World Report listed MUSC as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” for treatment of digestive disorders and psychiatric care.  The National Research Corporation’s survey indicated that MUSC is the “most preferred hospital” in our market.

We continued to provide high quality and compassionate care while achieving projected fiscal year activity increases of 5 percent for outpatient visits and 3 percent for admissions. We remain optimistic that we will achieve a positive bottom line for this fiscal year in line with our financial targets.

The Phase I hospital facility project involved a huge amount of work. The design for the hospital facility, central energy plant and garage was completed.  Extensive effort was devoted to preparation for the financing and loan closing.  A number of clinic relocations were completed to prepare for the Phase I project.

Substantial progress was made with capital improvement projects including: Clinical Sciences Building 1st and 2nd floors (Pediatric Emergency Room, Sleep Center, Dialysis, EEG/EMG and GCRC);  Rutledge Tower MRI installation;  and renovation of the adult Cardiology Clinic in Rutledge Tower. Significant progress was made on elevator modernization, the Neuro Interventional Room, and the new 13 bed ICU on 6 Southwest. Also, a number of major equipment installations were completed to enable enhancements to CT, MRI and nuclear medicine capabilities.

An educational and communication campaign was conducted to prepare for the November JCAHO accreditation survey. We successfully completed the survey with no Type I recommendations (no significant deficiencies), an overall score of 95, a perfect score of 100 in Ambulatory Care and a score of 99 in Behavioral Health.

We continued to devote a great deal of effort to patient safety and quality. Among other things, new Internet-based patient safety resources and publications were made available and the Patient Safety Net was implemented to enable ease in reporting of events. We established the Patient and Family Liaison office to enhance our ability to thoroughly address patent concerns or complaints. 

We successfully implemented a wireless telephone system (approximately 300 units) to improve communication and the patient care environment.  Most recently, a new consumer web site was launched to offer more interactive features and provide more detailed information concerning our services and health matters. 

There were numerous other significant accomplishments and operational improvements in addition to the examples listed above.  Our successful year has required a huge group effort and I would like to thank everyone for a job well done. The future promises to be exciting.

Contact list distributed for disaster emergency 

Safety and Security director Alonzo Nesmith distributed a draft list of contact names with departments and code numbers to speed the flow of accurate information in the event of a weather or disaster emergency. He asked that those named review the list and forward any changes to him as soon as possible.

“We have the print shop on standby,” Nesmith said. He said that once the information is in, the print shop will be able to deliver the cards within 24 hours.

For those not at the hospital communications meeting Tuesday, Nesmith will distribute the draft list by e-mail.

JCAHO Update
JCAHO consultant Lois Kerr presented a brief update of JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) readiness at MUSC:

  • The MUHA Quality Report is now posted to the JCAHO Web site. The report is favorable and can be accessed at http://www.JCAHO.org under General Public.
  • The Application for survey of Special Function Laboratory has been submitted to JCAHO and is awaiting survey dates.
  • JCAHO/CSR Committee membership has been restructured and monthly meeting dates established. Kerr distributed a list of the committee members and their contact numbers.
  • Self-assessment teams will be assigned by July 31.
  • Kathy Wade will be on campus in July to perform tracers.
  • A November mock survey will be scheduled and its results used for self-assessment.
  • Those entering data for the fall 2004 self-assessment should begin now.
  • The training of organizational Performance Improvement facilitators is in process.
  • George Rivas, consultant, is on campus and will be integrating EOC issues.
