SC AHEC names 2004 Future Health Professional of the Year

The South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (S.C. AHEC) has named Jason Williams as the 2004 Future Health Professional of the Year. 

Williams  is a rising junior at Richland Northeast High School and an active member of the S.C. AHEC Mid-Carolina regional Association of Future Health Professionals.

The S.C. AHEC Future Health Professional of the Year Award annually recognizes the exemplary academic preparation of a member of the S.C. AHEC Association of Future Health Profess-ionals. 

Nominees must be active members of the program for a minimum of seven months; be rising 11th-or 12th-graders, or agraduating high school senior during the 2003 - 2004 school term; and possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of a 2.75  and a 3.0 cumulative average in math and science.

The 2004 Student of the Year award was presented at the SC AHEC Future Health Professionals Summer Institute held June 15-18, on the campus of the University of South Carolina. 

The summer institute provides an intensive opportunity for secondary and post-secondary education students to explore primary and allied health careers, develop and enhance skills to promote academic excellence and professionalism, and explore oppor-tunities and resources for the pursuit of higher education.

S.C. AHEC is an innovative statewide system blending community health service with the education of health professionals through a cooperative effort by MUSC, USC, South Carolina Community Teaching Hospitals, and four local, non-profit regional AHEC centers. 

It is the only organization in South Carolina that addresses health care workforce needs beginning at the level of primary and secondary schools and extending to practicing health professionals throughout the state.
