Blood donation competitors tie for first place

B Positive! and Doing IT for Life tied once again for first place in the employee blood donation competition, making it the second consecutive win for both teams during the competition’s last two quarters. The present quarter began Aug. 17 and will run through Oct. 7.

Currently, B Positive! is in the lead again, with the Bloody Leeches and Ambulatory CARES nipping their heels.

“No employee team is allowed to accumulate more than 25 points, so the potential is there for every team to tie for first place,” said Annie Lovering, Red Cross Donor Room. “It would be wonderful if that happened.”

Members of the PA Platelets, College of Health Professions, smile in celebration of their recent victory for the summer semester student blood-donation competition. The Platelets came in first place, beating out nine other student teams by donating 25 units of blood. Graduate Studies' Bloodbournes followed in second place with 14 units donated.

Student blood donation competition winners, the PA Platelets, surged to victory with 25 donated units for the summer semester competition, which lasted from May 11 to Aug. 18. The fall semester competition began Aug. 23 and will run through Dec. 17.

All winning teams received movie passes.

Despite the enthusiasm of most teams, and especially the winners, Lovering noted the recent downturn in the number of donors heading to room 279 on the second floor of the main hospital.

“We really do need donors to give us a call,” she said. “We encourage donors to make appointments, but we also rely heavily on our walk-ins.”

The Red Cross Donor Room is open weekly on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Walk-ins are welcome, but those with appointments donate first. To make an appointment through Health Connection, call 792-0219 and press one. To reach the donor room, press two.
