Family Medicine to begin renovation

In the midst of construction at MUSC, the Department of Family Medicine’s Family Medicine Center will undergo its own renovation and refurbishment.

Beginning Sept. 18, the Ambulatory Care clinic will initiate phase one of its planned renovation. Phase one will last approximately six weeks, during which the Ashley side of the office (scheduled appointments) will be renovated.

The center’s two main entrances—from Calhoun Street in the front and from the patient parking lot in the rear—will remain open. Due to the construction, patients who enter the building using the rear entrance will need to observe posted signs that direct them around the construction.

To alleviate confusion, the office will use a temporary entrance from Halsey Boulevard in addition to the two main ingresses. The third entrance allows patient access without walking through clinical areas or navigating around construction within the building.

Renovations during phase one include:

  •  The registration station and two exam rooms will be unavailable. Though the patient entrance from the parking lot remains open, the information desk will move into the main lobby (the former central registration area).
  • Scheduled patients will enter through the rear (ambulance) entrance. Registration and a reception area will be available as patients arrive for their appointments.
  • The OB waiting room will become the Ashley waiting room.
  • The same-day clinic will be located in the Cooper section of the center (Calhoun Street). Operations will continue as usual for walk-in patients.
  • Signs in the parking lot, both at the gated entrance and in the canopy area, will direct patients with appointments to the ambulance entrance.
  • MUSC volunteers will be requested to direct patient traffic from the parking lot.
As phase one nears its conclusion in late October, The Catalyst will provide details of phase two.
