MUSC honored with Consumer Choice Award

The National Research Corporation has ranked the MUSC Medical Center  among approximately 180 hospitals nationally that have been honored with its 2004/2005 Consumer Choice Award.

The MUSC Medical Center is the only institution in the Charleston market to receive this award, and this is the seventh year in a row that the medical center has been recognized.

The National Research Corporation (NRC) said the winners are hospitals that consumers choose as having the highest quality and image in 154 markets throughout the U.S.

NRC Chief Executive Officer Michael D. Hays said winners are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the company’s annual NRC Healthcare Market Guide study.   Of the hospitals named by consumers in the study, the winning facilities rank highest in their Metropolitan  Statistical Areas as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau.

In the Charleston area, the MUSC Medical Center ranked highest for best overall quality, best doctors, best nurses, most personalized care, best image and reputation,  most preferred for all health needs, best community health program, latest technology and equipment, widest range of services, and hospital Web site used most often.

The NRC survey also rated the MUSC Medical Center number one in the Charleston market for cancer treatment, heart care, imaging services, mental health services, neurology, orthopaedic treatment/surgery, pediatric services, trans-plant, women/gynecology, senior services, bariatric weight loss surgery and physical therapy.

“Consumers are continuing to play an increasing role in their selection of  health care facilities and service,” Hays said. “As further information is made publicly available to consumers, we expect this trend to increase. With the industry’s shift to a consumer-driven model, we are pleased to recognize the health care organizations named as leaders by those they serve. The winners deserve recognition for the emphasis they have placed on providing quality care.”

The National Research Corporation is a recognized industry leader, with two decades of experience in health-care- specific performance measurement.
