Rumor Mill separates fact from fiction

Parking

Rumor: Is it true that the 30 minute limit for visitor parking at 135 Cannon Street (Cannon Place) is not being enforced for MUSC employees?
Truth: The 30-minute parking spaces located on the gravel lot adjacent to the 135 Cannon Street office building are intended to serve short-term parking needs of guests of MUSC central administration offices and business visitors to other offices at 135 Cannon Street. Employees are not authorized to park in the visitor lot except as visitors themselves and then must park in accordance with the posted time limits. Increased effort will be made by parking enforcement staff to insure appropriate use of these spaces. Ample courtesy parking is provided for Women’s Services patients in the parking lot at 30 Bee Street. Thirty Bee Street is a short distance from 135 Cannon Street and is connected to it by a short walk way. Under normal circumstances the preferred parking location for Women’s Services patients is the 30 Bee Street parking location.

Bank Building

Rumor: I heard that Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) prohibited tenants from moving in the fourth floor offices, Bank Building (corner Courtenay and Cannon), which were recently vacated by the College of Health Professions. Any truth to this rumor?
Truth: There are no OSHA standards, based on a recent visual inspection, that would prohibit occupants from moving into these areas. However, the future use of the building is being reviewed and there are no plans to move additional occupants into the building at this time.

Parking Garage

Rumor: I heard that the garage at President and Bee street will be closing soon. Is this true?
Truth: There is no truth to this rumor. This garage did lose approximately 40 spaces due to the construction of the Meducare helipad, however there are no plans to close the garage. In fact, future plans call for a new garage at Courtenay and Bee streets which will significantly increase the MUSC Parking system capacity.

Stairwell Wall Disintegrating

Rumor: I have been told that there is no money in the budget to repair the crumbling wall in the Basic Science Building stairwell across from room 340. This wall has been crumbling for at least five or six months and nobody cleans it up or repairs it. I’m surprised nobody has had some debris fall on them.
Truth: Repair of the piping inside the wall, which is the source of the problem, and repair of the wall itself will be funded. The design of the repair is under way, and work should be started soon.

Handicapped Parking

Rumor: People have been seen illegally using handicap hang tags in campus lots, but I hear that the university does not enforce these violations.
Truth: It is MUSC’s policy to provide handicap access to those who need it. With proper documentation both permanent and temporary access is granted. At any given time we have between 80 and 100 permanent assignments and an additional 20 temporaries. These spaces are provided at the same rate paid by non-handicap parkers. The Office of Parking Management will investigate abuse of handicap parking policies within the university parking system and take necessary and appropriate action including referral to departments for disciplinary action, and in extreme cases, criminal prosecution for theft of services. If you suspect such abuse, provide the Office of Parking Management OPM, or Public Safety with the name of the suspect (if known), vehicle description, license plate number, with location and time of the abuse.
