Sloan selected for ‘value of accountability’

The Children’s Hospital Kick It Up Group announced that Kathy Sloan, R.N., Pediatric Ambulatory, was selected as this quarter’s winner representing the MUSC value of accountability.

Each quarter, the Children’s Hospital spotlights an employee who represents one of the MUHA values-respect, accountability, adaptability, and excellence. This quarter’s value is accountability.

Pediatric Ambulatory's Kathy Sloan, center, celebrates with Children's Hospital coworkers, friends and colleagues. Sloan is this quarter's winner representing the MUSC value of accountability.

Sloan was chosen because she demonstrated her ability to accept personal responsibility for professional behavior, and employment of resources to ensure the highest quality of services are provided in a cost-effective manner. She was noted as listening to customer concerns and needs, taking personal action to meet their needs and resolve complaints, and apologizing for delays.

Sloan works as nursing coordinator for spina bifida patients.  As part of her role, she coordinates the often complex needs of her patients and her accountability is reflected in her high patient satisfaction scores.

According to her nomination letter and colleagues, all of her patients request to speak directly to her and look forward to seeing her during their clinic visits. She spends numerous hours at home making follow-up phone calls to ensure that patients’ needs are met. Her coworkers reported that, “all her patients and families think she’s fabulous,” and that she always has a smile or laugh for everyone.

The Kick It Up Group also recognized Sloan’s fellow nominees as excellent examples of accountable customer service, including: Pam Burke, R.N., Meducare; Sheila Jones, 8D; Kay Johnson, R.N., PCICU; Annette Crull, R.N., and Lauree Pearson, R.N., NNICU; and Vera Brown, Phlebotomy.
