Rock(n)research benefit raises money for CRI

MUSC Children's Hospital supporters and contributors gathered on a cold evening Feb. 26 to celebrate the opening of the Charles P. Darby Children's Research Institute (CRI) and recognize  benefactors and donors through this first annual rock(n)research event.

Participants arrived in colorful, jazzy rock(n)red carpet attire at Hibernian Society Hall. 

The evening was energized by the1980s pop group, The Pointer Sisters. 

The crowd of 350 people warmed to the music and dancing of The Pointer Sisters, sampled sumptuous cuisine from Lowcountry chefs and restaurants including High Cotton, 39 Rue de Jean, Oak Steakhouse, Basil Restaurant and Kaminsky's Most Excellent Café, plus participated in the rock(n)horse silent auction, which featured specially-designed miniature rocking horses by national celebrities and artists.

Left photo: A total of 28 celebrity/artist-designed rocking horses from Angela Bassett, Manolo Blahnik, Dan Marino, Sharon Stone, Adam Sandler, Stuart Weitzman and the cast of Will and Grace were dusplayed. The pieces were up for auction during the Feb. 26 event. 

Proceeds raised from the event netted more than $80,000, with about $15,500 coming from the rock(n)horse silent auction.

The CRI mission
The Children’s Research Institute was created to strengthen children’s research at MUSC. Its mission is to improve the lives of children, their families and communities by conducting high quality children’s research by training superior physicians and scientists, and by fostering innovation through the sciences of discovery and application.
