Registration being accepted for PACT

Parents and Children Together (PACT) programs will be offered Jan. 23 through April 1 at three Charleston area locations.

PACT has openings in early childhood family education for families with children ages 16 months to 40 months. Weekly classes consist of parent-child “play and learn together” activities, followed by a parent discussion while the children play together supervised by early childhood educators. MUSC’s pediatric practitioner Kathy Sloan facilitates two of these classes.

“Through PACT I met parents who were different yet the same. They were the support group I needed; we grew together,” said Stephanie Carson, MUSC ICU nurse. “I think my child is so happy now because PACT helped me to be a better parent.” PACT is especially helpful in teaching children separation skills by providing short, successful experiences with nurturing caretakers while parents are just down the hall.

According to the Families and Work Institute, the impact of environmental factors on a young child’s brain development is dramatic and specific, not merely influencing general development, but actually affecting how the intricate circuitry of the human brain is “wired.”

PACT classes meet weekly for 10-weeks beginning Jan. 23. There are  openings in the following classes:

Toddlers (ages 16-40 months) and Parents:
  • Mondays and Tuesdays, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m., Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Sullivan’s Island.
  • Wednesdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m., Cherokee Place United Methodist Church, North Charleston.
  • Saturdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m., First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, peninsular Charleston.

The fees for PACT classes are based on family income; discounts and scholarships are available to all families who need them.
