MUSC Campus of the South Carolina College of Pharmacy (SCCP) recognized pharmacy students with annual and endowed pharmacy scholarships and other awards totaling more than $97,000 in a special ceremony held Sept. 21 at the Town & Country Conference Center in Charleston.

Recipients of the Walgreens Scholarship are Qingyuan Cao, Brooke Bivens, MacKenzie Turner, Amy Thames and Lembe Ambe. Dr. Jessica Puckett-Beasley, district pharmacy supervisor, third from right, also joins in recognizing scholarship winners.

Joseph DiPiro, PharmD, SCCP executive dean, and Arnold Karig, PharmD, MUSC College of Pharmacy dean, welcomed students, parents and guests to the event and presented the scholarship awards. This year, SCCP students received a total of 31 titled scholarships representing 81 awards.

William Gibson and Qingyuan Cao are joined by Ron and Claudia Hubbard, presenters of the Robert C. Hubbard III and Claudia B. Hubbard Tiger Scholarship.

Among the many organizations, corporations and private individuals that gift to the College of Pharmacy include Cardinal Health Pharmacy and the Jonathan S. Hollman, Charleston County Pharmacy Auxiliary, D.L. Scurry Foundation, Flanders, Inc., National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Education Foundation, Pharmacists Mutual Companies, Walgreens and Wal-Mart Scholarships.

The scholarship dollar amount represents more than a 50 percent increase in scholarship funds available to students compared to 2004, according to Anne P. Spencer, PharmD, chair of the college’s Awards, Honors and Scholarship Committee.
