Winners were Kenneth Canonge, Psychiatry lab; Karen Majors, Department of Coding, Revenue Enhancement & Charge Capture/UMA; and Tabetha Hicklin, University Family Medicine.
  • Canonge was nominated by Kendra Scott. “Ken went out of his way to help a disoriented patient released from Charleston Memorial Hospital. Somehow this patient wandered to the Institute of Psychiatry Lab looking for his medication. After Ken was finally able to get a clear understanding of what the patient was talking about, he walked him back to Charleston Memorial and spoke with the emergency room nurse about the situation, where the patient received his medication and was pointed in the right direction toward the VA Hospital.” Canonge, an operations manager, has been employed with MUSC/UMA since 2002.
  • Majors was nominated by two people. Leanne Shattuck, Certified Procedural Coder president, Palmetto Professional Coders Association, and Angela Malphrus. Shattuck wrote: “Karen is an exceptional employee who is always ready to help out with other areas within our division. She is always the first to volunteer to help with new projects and other assigned duties. She has been a great asset to the PPCA organization in organizing our quarterly newsletters and providing programs for others to obtain education credits to help maintain their credentials. Karen, a big thanks for all you do for the Department of Coding, Revenue Enhancement and Charge Capture and the Palmetto Professional Coders Association.”  Malphrus wrote: “Karen deserves special recognition for all of the hard work, time and effort she invested preparing the CRC Land poster she submitted on behalf of our department for hospital's week. Karen contributed many hours of her personal time on this project developing a poster that truly reflects our mission, and in our opinion was second to none! Great job, Karen. We appreciate your initiative, creativity and team spirit.”  Majors, a coder II/trainer, has been employed with MUSC/UMA since 1991.
  • Hicklin was nominated by Maria Gibson, M.D. “Tabetha is a new member of the University Family Medicine team. She worked above and beyond her job description during the time when we were submitting the application for the ADA recognition of the Diabetes Self Management Education program. She successfully created a database of UFM patients with diabetes, which was used for the residents’ research projects, and won second place among South Carolina research presentations at Hickory Knob residents’ research symposium in May. Without this database we would not be able to obtain our outcome measures for this project and the ADA recognition application.” Hicklin, a clinical clerical assistant, has been employed with MUSC/UMA since 2005.
