UMA presents quarterly Applause awards

October was award month for the winners of University Medical Associates (UMA) quarterly Applause awards for the third quarter.

Winners were honored by their departments after a surprise on-the-job visit from the UMA prize patrol. Awards included a gold lapel pin with the MUSC seal, a framed certificate, $50, a half-day (four hours) of paid time off, and a cake to share with co-workers.

Winners were Maxine Robinson, Forensic Pathology; Tammy Justice-Alberts, University Family Medicine-Trident; and Tanis Koester, Human Resources.
  • Robinson was nominated by Andrew and Cheryl Savage: “Our office has quite a bit of contact with the doctors in the Forensic Pathology Department. Maxine Robinson, the receptionist, has always gone above and beyond to assist us with any request we have made. Maxine is always pleasant, courteous, helpful and quick to respond to any question or request. Maxine is an excellent representative, not only for the Forensic Pathology Department, but for the Medical University of South Carolina, as well. MUSC is most fortunate to have Ms. Robinson as an employee and she is most deserving of applause for a job well done.” Her award was presented in September because of scheduling difficulties. Robinson, a forensics operations coordinator, has been employed with MUSC/UMA since 1992.
  • Justice was nominated by Paul Provenzano and Cheri Schauman, R.N. Provenzano said: “Tammy volunteered to staff our new East Cooper office until we hired and trained a permanent staff person. Since Aug. 1, 2005, Tammy has accepted deliveries, stocked shelves, assembled equipment, moved furniture, and whatever has been required to provide a fully functioning office for our patients and our providers. Additionally, she has worked on her University Family Medicine telephone triage and Rx lines whenever time permitted (remotely by phone and computer from the new office). Our department and UMA owe Tammy a great deal of appreciation and respect. She's terrific!” Schauman said: “Tammy volunteered to be our LPN [licensed practical nurse] to help spearhead the opening of UFM's new East Cooper office. She cleaned, unpacked, stocked and labeled, as well as oriented the new LPN when she was  ready to assume her duties. She also continued to help me manage the call volume on the telephones at UMF, working the refill request line and triage when time permitted. I would not have been able to do well without her help, even long distance. She is the best.” Justice-Alberts, a licensed practical nurse, has been with MUSC/UMA since 1998.
  • Koester was nominated by Debra Boekenoogen: “Tanis has been wonderful to work with. I was out to have a baby and have been working with her to make sure I was completing the paperwork for my FMLA [Family Medical Leave Act]. Tanis provided me with the information and instructions for the process. When a problem would arise, Tanis was right there to help with the solution. I am glad we have people in the Human Resources Department who care so much about the employees.” Koester, an HR coordinator, has been with MUSC/UMA since 1992.
