Worthington Research Papers Competition set for Jan. 31

The Waring Library Society (WLS) and the Waring Historical Library at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston invite entries for the W. Curtis Worthington Jr., Undergraduate and Graduate Research Papers Competition for January 2007.
    
Papers should represent an original, comprehensive effort in research and documentation of some aspect of the history of the health sciences, including biology, chemistry, genetics, biochemistry, physics, and all medical, dental, pharmacological, and other health science disciplines. Entries must be received by Jan. 31.
    
“We’re happy to recognize excellence in health care research among students,” said James Ward, M.D., a 1966 College of Medicine alumnuis and WLS board member. “We wanted to create an award that is motivated by science and discovery, plus honor a man, Dr. Curtis Worthington, for his long-term contributions and dedication to preserving the history of health science at MUSC.”
    
Entries may not have been published previously, nor be submitted more than once. A person may submit only one entry each year. The same person may not win first prize during two consecutive years. This competition is open to any degree-seeking individual attending an accredited college or university. Entries must be no less than 2,500 words nor more than 5,000 words. Photographs or illustrations should be included whenever possible or appropriate.
 
Manuscripts should be submitted as a Word document or as an unformatted ASCII-preferred document. Send completed application form as an attachment with your submission; do not include any personal identification information in the text of your submission. Winners agree to grant the Waring Historical Library and WLS both initial and subsequent publication rights in any manner or form without further compensation. Except as provided above, copyright ownership otherwise remains with the author.
    
No more than two awards (first and second prize) in each the undergraduate graduate categories are given each year, consisting of a commemorative medal and monetary award as follows: $1,000, first prize; $1000; $750, second prize and certificate of commendation, third prize. Honorable mention certificates will be presented in each category.
   
 The two first-prize papers in each category will be published in the Journal of the South Carolina Medical Association.

The WLS Awards Committee reserves the right to not give any or all awards in a particular year.
