Childhood developmental disabilities subject of March 17 conference

Family Connection of South Carolina presents “Of Hopes and Dreams Conference XII- Extreme Makeover: Life Edition” on March 17 and 18 in Columbia.
 
The conference is developed for parents and professionals to explore issues and challenges families have in caring for children with developmental disabilities, chronic illnesses and long-term health needs.
 
The conference will kick off from 6 to 8 p.m. March 17 at EdVenture Children’s Museum in Columbia. This is a pre-conference, informal, family night networking social. Dinner will be donated by Groucho’s-Broad River with music and entertainment by Country Spirit, an amateur country-dance team. The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 18 at Brookland Banquet and Conference Center in West Columbia.
 
Cynthia Redd, M.Ed. will be the keynote speaker for the conference. She is a Pediatric Developmental Specialist with the Hospital/Home Intervention Program at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, N.C. She is also the parent of a 17-year-old with Down’s syndrome.
 
“Extreme Makeover: Life Edition” will mark the 12th anniversary of the statewide conference that provides resources and information for families who have children with special needs and professionals who care for these children. It will also provide continuing education credit units for social work, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, licensed marriage and family therapy, foster parents, certified adoption investigators, licensed professional counseling, psycho-educational specialist and early interventionist. Family Connection of SC Inc. is a non-profit, statewide support network of parents working with community professionals to provide parent-to-parent support and assurance to strengthen families with children of all ages who have special needs. Programs and services are based on the principle of parent-to-parent networking.
