MUSC nurses ‘rock’ on path to excellence

by Heather Woolwine
Public Relations
Each year, about this time, the murmurs and whispers begin. Who will it be this year? Who will be the unit, division and the MUSC Nurse of the Year winners? While those answers may have to wait until the annual Excellence in Nursing ceremony May 12, one thing is for certain: all MUSC Nurses Rock!

In keeping with this year’s theme, Nurses Rock, the nurse’s week planning committee put together a week full of activities and fun designed to honor and celebrate those women and men who care for patients every step of the way, often in and out of the hospital.

On May 8, a special Florence Nightingale presentation by Phyllis Malpus will take place from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Room 220 of the College of Nursing.

On May 10 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., various nursing organizations and vendors will display information and goods in the lobby area adjacent to the cafeteria in the main hospital. Also that afternoon, another Florence Nightingale presentation and certified nurse leader recognition and certification winners’ recognition ceremony will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Institute of Psychiatry auditorium.

Hospital employees can take part in a Who’s Who contest in the hospital lobby near the cafeteria entrance on Thursday, May 11. Also on Thursday evening, a special Florence Nightingale presentation will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the 2 West Amphitheater.

Finally, on May 12 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., hospital employees, nurses, and staff can participate in the awards ceremony and reception at the Basic Sciences Building auditorium with all refreshments provided by Pfizer pharmaceutical company.

Guest Speaker Iwana Ridgill, Ph.D, public speaker and humorist, will provide information and her perspective on the climate of change in nursing from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the 2 West Amphitheater. The week will conclude with a special Florence Nightingale presentation for third shift nurses and employees from 6 to 7 p.m. in the 2 West classroom.

As part of the nurse’s week festivities, door prizes will be given away at each event and include: lunch for two to area restaurants, a Southern Maverick’s Kitchen chef package, handmade jewelry and crafts, and other goodies.
