MUSC Foundation replaces Health Sciences Foundation name July 1

The Health Sciences Foundation (HSF) of MUSC will officially become known as the Medical University of South Carolina Foundation beginning July 1.

Founded in 1966, the Health Sciences Foundation is responsible for the financial management of philanthropic gifts made in support of the Medical University and its mission. It was created in part to ensure that all such donations would be tax-deductible, and to ensure that they would be used in the manner intended by benefactors.

These days, amid tightening state and federal budgets, the foundation is playing an increasingly critical role in supporting South Carolina’s preeminent medical university. During the past 40 years, the foundation has amassed assets totaling almost $235 million—money that is used to support scholarships, research programs, new patient services and new building projects, to name a few.

The foundation is changing its name to the MUSC Foundation to make it more easily identifiable as an enterprise of the Medical University, said Tom Anderson, foundation CEO.

“Even though the Health Sciences Foundation has existed for 40 years, a lot of people don’t immediately recognize it as part of the MUSC family. This is especially common among people who are new to the area,” said Anderson.

“We’re hopeful that this new name will let people know instantly that a gift to the MUSC Foundation is a gift in support of the Medical University and its mission. We’re confident that this understanding will lead even more people to make gifts to the university.”
