AHEC names Future Health Professional of the Year

The South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (South Carolina AHEC) named Bridget Manning as the 2006 Future Health Professional of the Year. Manning is a recent graduate from Wilson High School in Florence and an active member of the Pee Dee region of the South Carolina AHEC Association of Future Health Professionals.

The SC AHEC Future Health Professional of the Year Award annually recognizes the exemplary academic preparation and community service of a member of the SC AHEC Association of Future Health Professionals. Nominees must have been an active member of the program for a minimum of seven months; a rising 11th or 12th grader, or graduating high school senior during the 2005 – 2006 school term; and possess a minimum of a 2.75 cumulative grade point average and 3.0 cumulative average in math and science.

Manning exemplifies the dedication and focus needed to become a health professional.

“Joining AHEC has provided me with a peek into the health professions field through the summer courses such as medical terminology and pharmacy technician,” Manning explains. “I think I will truly be able to excel at the College of Charleston, gain acceptance to MUSC and finally be able to open up my own women’s clinic in the downtown Charleston area.”

Bridget Manning, left, accepts the 2006 Future Health Professional of the Year award from Angelica Williams, director of Student Development and Diversity Programs.

“Academically, Bridget has worked very hard and excelled as a student and a dedicated member of the Pee Dee AHEC program,” said Judy Jones, student development and diversity program coordinator for Pee Dee AHEC.

The award was presented at the 2006 Future Health Professionals Leadership Institute June 13-16, at Furman University. The Summer Institute provides an intensive, residential educational experience for high school and undergraduate students interested in a health professions career. The four-day event includes activities and interactive sessions on academic and career planning, resource development and basic health skills training. Sessions are facilitated by health care practitioners and educators.

The SC AHEC exists to help improve the health of South Carolina’s citizens.  Established in 1972, SC AHEC is the only organization in South Carolina that addresses health care workforce needs starting at the level of primary and secondary school education and extending to practicing health care professionals throughout the state. The success of the SC AHEC is due to the excellent partnerships that have been built with South Carolina’s colleges, universities, teaching hospitals and communities.
