National Hispanic Heritage Month

MUSC Hispanic-American Heritage Festival
Sept. 15 - Oct. 15

Hispanic American Heritage Month is celebrated from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 each year in the United States. Hispanic American Heritage Week was celebrated during the week of Sept. 15 beginning in 1968. That date was chosen because several Latin American countries celebrate their independence day on Sept.15, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence day on Sept. 16 and Chile’s independence day is Sept. 18.

The celebration was extended to a month in 1998 and now includes Dia de la Raza on Oct. 12. The president issues a proclamation in early September each year inviting Americans to celebrate the traditions, ancestry, and achievements of Hispanic Americans.
