Peggy Ann Wallace, a unit secretary in 2-Center Med Surgery for almost 35 years, died Dec. 21.

Peggy Wallace

Relatives and friends of  Wallace attended her funeral services at Greater St. John AME Church Dec. 28. A memorial service for family, friends and co-workers was also held at St. Luke's Chapel Jan. 24.

Born Feb. 11, 1951 in Charleston to the late Samuel Jenkins Jr. and the late Celestine Richardson, she attended Charleston County schools and was a 1969 graduate of C.A. Brown High School. Wallace was a member of the Ebenezer AME Church in Charleston.

Wallace worked at MUSC for more than 34 years, starting at Coronary Care Unit in 1972. She later moved to work at Chest Pain-Emergency Serivces before working as an administrative specialist in 2-Center Med Cardiovascular. She also was employed by Publix supermarkets as a part-time cashier.

A consummate professional, loyal, friendly and caring person, Wallace was very devoted to her church, family and community. She is survived by children Kristen and Shelton, a grandson, JaWaun, and sister, Alice M. Jenkins and other relatives.

I met and worked with Peggy when I first started at MUSC in 1982 in the tiny four-bed CCU on 6 Southwest.  She was a pleasure to work with and always had a smile. She made coming to work enjoyable.
—Cheryl Brian, R.N., University Risk Management

Our old CCU chain has been broken, but our hearts and spirits will always be connected. Peggy and I were friends for more than 20 years. As a matter of fact, she was the first friend I made when I moved here to Charleston. Peggy was always willing to help everyone on and off the unit. She really knew the ‘workings of MUSC.’ She was a quiet, hardworking person that had nicknames for everyone. We all loved her, but God loved her best. Goodbye my friend.
—Donna Sledge-Cohen, R.N., Heart and Vascular Center

I met Peggy 15 years ago while working in CCU. She was one of the most pleasant and compassionate people I have every met. She taught me how to be one of the most organized secretaries employed by MUSC. Peggy and I became great friends after a long-term working relationship. I will miss her deeply. My deepest sympathy to her family.
—Darlene Gaffney, MUSC Heart and Vascular Center
