Financial review discussed at WSI meeting

MUSC faculty, residents and students gained knowledge about university costs and expenditures Sept. 19 as part of the Women Scholar Initiative’s (WSI) Fall Colloquium held at the College of Health Professions.

Lisa Montgomery, vice president for finance & administration, led a packed room in the hour-and-a-half discussion about how MUSC funds its academic and clinical missions and projects, and a general overview of the institution’s funds flow, revenue and expenses. She addressed topics from managing changes in state appropriations to a review of effective institutional funding models.

“I’m delighted with this and any opportunity to talk about our institution’s funding structure,” said Montgomery, who spoke of the importance of modeling and working with peer institutions. “We’re now operating in a new era of transparency where communicating this information is important, especially among our young faculty and their colleagues.”

Montgomery was joined by Patrick Walmsley, MUSC chief financial officer, and other members of the University’s Funds Flow Committee, who were available to provide information and answer questions.

“I was very pleased to see that the Women’s Scholars Initiative has evolved into a group that addresses topics that are important to all faculty, and of course, the financial decision making is one of those topics,” said Lisa L. Cunningham, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and co-chair of the WSI Mentoring Sub-committee.

The presentation ended with a networking reception for faculty and participants in the CHP Atrium. The colloquium is jointly organized by WSI’s Mid-day Networking and Mentoring Sub-committees.

The Women Scholars Initiative is a joint project of both the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of the President. The group’s long-term goal is to promote and enhance the careers of women faculty on campus.
