Annual AIDS symposium to feature lectures, discussion

The 15th annual MUSC AIDS Symposium 2007 sponsored by the South Carolina Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) National Medical Honor Society will take place Nov. 14-16 at the Basic Science Building Auditorium. The symposium features a series of lectures and addresses conducted by guest speakers from multiple health disciplines.
 
The AOA opening lecture features Luis J. Montaner, DVM., D.Phil., professor and director of the HIV-1 Immuno-pathogenesis Laboratory at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia. Other event speakers include Virginia King, director of Prevention Services for Lowcountry AIDS Services, who will speak about HIV Infection and the patient’s perspective.
 
The Nov. 15 session features a panel discussion led by King. Subsequent talks also will focus on current and future antiretroviral therapy (Jeffrey Lennox, M.D., medical director, Grady IDP and co-PI, Emory CFAR Clinical Research in Atlanta); Therapy-mediated Innate Immune reconstitution and immunotherapy in HIV Infection (Montaner); Oral manifestations of HIV /AIDS (David Resznik, DDS, director of the Oral Health Center Infectious Disease program); Clinico-pathological aspects of AIDS (panel discussion, Preston Church, M.D.);
 
Nov. 16: HIV in 2007 and Beyond: Challenges in the current pandemic (Victoria Cargill, M.D., director of Minority Research and director of Clinical Studies, Office of AIDS Research, NIH); AIDS in South Carolina (Robert Ball, M.D., panel discussion) and Assessment and Modification of Risk Behaviors Associated with HIV/AIDS (James Sacco, training session).
