Phonebook recycling winners announced

by Christine von Kolnitz Cooley
Engineering & Facilities
During this year’s phone book recycling effort, a number of MUSC employees performed remarkably in their ecological duties.

Recyclers were asked to put their name and phone number on the phonebook before they dropped it in one of the 30 bins across campus. The following winners earned prizes and recognition for their participation: Essie Jenkins, Verna Jamison, Doris Thomas, Beth Reeves, Marilyn Baker, Kim Duncan, Lourine Waiters, Cindy Rose, Debbie Maguire, Patricia Smith, Sue Bobo, Tina Rapstine, Jim Peyton, Claudio Schonholz, Sandra Stringer, Kristen Randal, Lonita Spivey, Renee Arcilesi, and Teri Lynn Herbert.

The winners of the recycling effort will receive a coffee mug, which we encourage everyone to use instead of disposable cups; a recycled content T-shirt; and a compact fluorescent light bulb. The compact fluorescent bulb will replace a 60-watt bulb and could save up to $53 during the life of the bulb.

MUSC’s Recycling Office appreciates all the people who took time to recycle their phonebooks this year. More than 8,600 pounds were recycled; equaling about 73 trees. All the bins were collected and taken to the Charleston County Recycling Center.

It takes many individuals making choices each day to create significant change. Here’s a quick list of things you can do to change your carbon footprint:
  • Turn lights out when you leave any room for more than five seconds.
  • Turn off your computer when you are not working on it. (Some computers may have to stay on. Please check with a computer technician to determine power on/sleep settings.)
  • Use power strips to switch off equipment such as coffee pots and microwaves. The “standby” consumption of these products can be equivalent to that of a 75 or 100 watt light bulb running continuously. q  Use power strips for peripherals such as scanners, speakers and printers. Keep the power strip off until you are ready to use these devices.
  • Power off your monitor if you are leaving your office anytime during the day.
