Tips to avoid weight gain during holidays

Whether it’s the chocolate-chip cookies overflowing at the office holiday party or grandma’s special dish of macaroni and cheese that she only makes once a year, culinary temptations are abundant this time of year.

To assist in calorie control and overall mindful eating during the holidays, the Weight Management Center shares the following tips on how to enjoy the season within reason:
  • Focus on weight management rather than weight loss.
  • Do not approach the holidays with intentions of dieting after the New Year. This leads to greater holiday indulgence, because you’ll be anticipating food restriction come January. For example, you’d better eat the “good stuff” while you can.
  • One day of overeating won’t break your weight management plan. If you overindulge at a meal, put it behind you and resume the plan without guilt.
  • Take small healthy snacks when you go shopping.
  • When setting out food, place healthier options (fruits and veggies) where they’re easy to reach.
  • Fill your plate with fruits, veggies and lean meats before reaching for heavier courses.
  • Eat slowly. Once finished, sip on water or eat a mint/gum, and avoid food areas.
  • Put holiday food away within two hours of serving it.
  • Plan an exercise activity for the day of holiday parties. For example, start a family walk or football game tradition.
  • Replace butter or oils in recipes with applesauce.
