Meet...Richard

Name: Richard Clark Webb, M.D.

College: Medicine.

Favorite sports: Football and golf.

First job: Hawaiian shaved ice stand.

Item you must have in the refrigerator: Sweet tea.

What led you to become a doctor: During my sophomore year of high school, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Throughout her treatment process, I became friends with her surgeons. These surgeons later assisted me with my career as an operating room orderly and have continued to aide me in my medical school journey. My ancestors, including my grandfathers and father, have served our country in the Marines and Army. I have followed in their footsteps by participating in the Army medical scholarship program. I look forward to continuing my service as a general surgery resident at Walter Reed Army Hospital this summer.

I'm a stickler about...: Staying true to one's word.

Funniest moment: The Great Popcorn Fire of 2006. While on call during my third year of internal medicine rotation, I had a craving for popcorn. I set the timer on the nursing lounge microwave for three minutes and left. As I went back to get my popcorn, I noticed clouds of smoke wafting from the lounge. The alarm sounded and I ducked into the conference room to avoid the embarrassment. However, I was confronted by security and a stern nurse manager who took my name, ID number and lectured me. To this day the ward secretary shakes her head, smiles and asks, “Have you had any good popcorn lately?”

Words of advice for MUSC students: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” —Romans 8:28
