University HRM offers free lunch seminars

The University Human Resource Management Training Department is sponsoring the 2007 Brown Bag Lunch Seminars. The seminars are free, one-hour informational sessions on a variety of topics. Attendees are encouraged to bring lunch. No registration is required. All classes are from noon to 1 p.m.

June 20: Secrets of Persuasive Delivery
Speaker: Ceila Childress, author of “Persuasive Delivery in the Courtroom.”
Have you ever wanted to know how to capture an audience? Childress will share tips on how to gain audience admiration and respect. The seminar is held in Room 322, College of Nursing.

June 27: Summer Safety for Your Children
Speaker: Amy Ethridge, Safe Kids Trident Area coordinator
Summer time is here. For most children, this means more outdoor activities (swimming, camping, bike riding, etc…) and with the fourth of July celebration, fireworks. For all parents, this means being extra vigilant to keep your child safe and healthy. Ethridge will answer questions and discuss how to keep your child safe this summer. The summer safety session will be held in Room 107, Education Center/Library Building.

July 11: Protecting You and Your Family from Identity Theft
Speaker: Lt. Timothy Bussey, MUSC Public Safety
Millions of Americans have already fallen prey to identity thieves. Of those, 5 percent to 7 percent are children younger than 18, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Children are becoming a favored target because the credit bureaus will have no previous information relative to the child’s social security number. Bussey will share ways to safeguard the entire family from identity theft. The protection from identify theft seminar will be held in Room 107, Education Center/Library Building.

July 17: Threads of Tradition: Quilts by Nora
Speaker: Nora Williams, University HRM
Traditions have powerful meaning. They are purposely passed down because they have values and sustain continuity for the family. Quilts weave the strands of lives into a tapestry to tell stories. Williams’ knowledge and involvement in the making of quilts and the stories of the tradition are compelling. The quilting seminars will be held in Room 322, College of Nursing

July 18: Hurricanes and Disaster Insurance Coverage
Speakers: South Carolina Insurance News Service
For many people, insurance is confusing. Although the concept is simple, people can easily get lost in its world of peculiar and unfamiliar procedures. Individuals may be thinking about buying other types of coverage such as flood insurance but are too afraid to ask. The South Carolina Insurance News Service representative can help at this seminar, held in Room 107, Education Center/Library Building.

July 25: End of Life Issues
Speaker: Annette Drachman, JD, director of Legal Affairs for MUHA
What happens if you are not competent or able to communicate a desire to die a natural death? Have you chosen a person to make medical care decisions for you if you are not competent or able to communicate them? Do you know the answers to these questions for family members? Drachman will answer questions and discuss other end of life issues. The seminar will be held in Room 107, Education Center/Library Building.
