MUSC Excellence at the University

Rewards, recognition program unveiled

Details of a new Rewards and Recognition Program, under the MUSC Excellence initiative for the University’s Finance and Administration (F&A) Division, was unveiled by members of the Rewards and Recognition Committee (RRC) in a May Leadership Development Institute (LDI) conference. The new program will begin in July and offer several recognition opportunities.

Committee members include Shari Bergquist, Cindy Garmon, Julie Dorn, Stacy Haney and Joyce Oltmann from Operations; Daisy Robinson and Tina Chapman from Finance; and Rudy Chapman, Lou Franz and Anthony Dent from Facilities and Engineering.  The committee is led by Roy Dingle of the Business Services Department and sponsored by Patrick Wamsley, University chief financial officer.

RRC members operate with the assumption that employee recognition is more than a nice gesture between people. Moreover, employee recognition is a communication tool that reinforces and rewards the most important outcomes people create for the division. RRC members also believe that when employees are recognized the right way, it gives them the feeling that their work performance is worthwhile. Recognition also reinforces behaviors consistent with positive outcomes. An effective employee recognition system is a simple, immediate and very powerful reinforcement tool.

In order to complement MUSC’s journey to Excellence, the RRC proposed the following components of a new F&A Employee Recognition Program: the PEER (Promoting Employee Excellence with Recognition) Postcard, the Applause Award, and the Leader of the Quarter Award. The PEER Postcard allows employees to recognize and thank each other for assisting in a task, or when an employee is observed participating in standards of behavior that are consistent with MUSC Excellence.

The old F&A Applause Award was improved and represents a higher level award program beyond the PEER Postcard. It is much more than a thank-you card, and should only be presented to employees who perform above and beyond expectations. Applause Award winners become eligible for the Employee of the Month and Employee of the Year awards. The F&A Leader of the Quarter Award recognizes leadership that exemplifies the MUSC Excellence pillar goals of service, people, quality, finance, and growth.

To recognize PEER Postcard recipients and monthly Applause nominees, Employee Appreciation Events are scheduled at 1 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month in Room 803, Harborview Office Tower. Cake and punch will be served at these events.
