Psychiatry's Burgess honored as 2007 Employee of the Year

Sharing her time to help children cope with life’s daily problems and connecting patients to helpful resources is what Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences’ Tracy Burgess does everyday.   Burgess, who works with at-risk children at the Star Ladson Day Treatment Program in North Charleston, was recognized as the medical center’s 2007 Employee of the Year Aug. 22. The 41-year-old is a clinical counselor who has worked with MUSC since 1991. She previously was an Employee of the Month recipient in December 2006 and January. She has a big heart for people, especially those desperately in need of help.

Burgess was recognized for her compassion and commitment when she helped a 12-year-old patient cope with several unexpected family deaths. She aided the pre-teen by coordinating transportation and clinical support to her sessions and the hospital during a tragic time.

She was nominated by co-worker Cynthia Pluto and fellow counselors and co-workers.

As the inaugural winner of this award, Burgess received numerous prizes donated by community businesses, including the 1837 Bed and Breakfast, Charleston Cake Lady, Creech’s Florist, Ladies Choice Fitness Center, Fort Sumter Tours and Spirit Line Cruises, Gullah Gourmet, Maverick's Southern Kitchen, and others.

The award was coordinated by the medical center’s reward and recognition team as part of the MUSC Excellence initiative.

MUSC employees voted from among 15 nominees—all previous Employee of the Month recipients within the past year. Voting was cast via the MUHA intranet or by official ballot between July 23 to Aug. 3.
