HR Management to offer training courses

Business Writing
10 a.m. to noon, Sept. 18, Room 803, Harborview Office tower (HOT). Instructor: Tom Waldrep
Participants will learn how to avoid mistakes in business correspondence by getting a comprehensive, confidence-building review of the basic rules of grammar, capitalization, word usage, sentence structure and punctuation. Participants will learn how to organize and write strong, action-oriented business correspondence to get the reader’s attention and desired results.

Microsoft Access
9 a.m. to noon, Sept. 26, Room 201, HOT. Led by Trident Technical College Representatives
This course introduces four basic objects needed to create and operate a simple business  database system. Tables and their relationships are introduced, as well as queries, forms, and reports. Participants may also bring questions regarding present Access database projects. No prior knowledge of Access is necessary, but database experience is helpful. Cost is $50.

Zero Tolerance to Violence in the Workplace
9 to 11 a.m., Oct. 9, Room 107, Education Center/Library Building. Instructor: Lt. Timothy Bussey
The objective of this training is to develop and support a work environment that will prevent and effectively respond to violent situations in the workplace. In order to increase employee and student understanding of work place violence, these areas will be discussed: defining workplace violence, identifying and recognizing actual and potential violent situations, response and intervention, and follow-up to a violent situation. All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to attend.

Microsoft PowerPoint Level 2
9 a.m. to noon, Oct. 10, Room 201, HOT. Led by Trident Technical College Representatives
Learn to enhance presentations with features that transform a basic presentation into a more powerful means of communication. Use features that draw, animate and format presentations with professional quality. Prerequisite: PowerPoint basics or equivalent skills. Cost is $50.

Microsoft Excel Simple Formulas
9 a.m. to noon, Oct. 18, Room 201, HOT. Led by Trident Technical College Representatives
Learn to create basic formulas and use more advanced functions such as date, mathematical, financial, logical, data list functions and unusual uses for formulas and functions. Students observe demonstrations of look-up functions. Emphasis is placed on designing formulas to be linked and copied, and linking cells to other workbook pages and files. Prerequisite: Excel basics or equivalent skills. Cost is $50.

Employment 101
9 a.m. to noon, Oct. 25, Room 803, HOT. Lead by HRM Employment Consultants
Selecting the right person for the job is the beginning of a productive employment relationship. This seminar reviews applicable labor and hiring laws, interview techniques and record keeping. At the conclusion of the session, managers will be provided the tools and resources necessary to conduct interviews and make positive employment selection decisions. Hiring managers are encouraged to attend.

Embracing Cultural Diversity
9 a.m. to noon, Oct. 31, Room 803, HOT. Led by Mike Vanderhurst, Dana Tumbleston and Edra Pinckney
Understanding cultural diversity aspects such as race, age, ethnicity, and disability is an important basis for creating a respectable workplace. Participants will receive training regarding communication, cultural competency, embracing uniqueness, what constitutes harassment, regulatory practices and federal law. This class will provide participants with an opportunity to apply knowledge to hands-on case studies. Instructors from the Affirmative Action/EEO office and the Department of Human Resources Management will provide an overview of many aspects of cultural competence in the workplace.

Anti-Harassment Training
9 a.m. to noon, Nov. 6, Room 803, HOT. Instructor: Edra Pinckney

Get Prepared for Retirement: Are you ready?
8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nov. 16, Room 803, HOT. Instructor: Dee Crawford
Have you thought about retirement? Do you have enough money saved to supplement your retirement income? Do you know how much replacement income to expect from the S.C. Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program?Representatives from the Retirement System, Employee Insurance Program,  Deferred Compensation, and Social Security Admini-stration will answer these questions and others.
 
Retired and Ready!
8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Dec. 7, Room 803, HOT. Instructor: Dee Crawford
This workshop will assist in making decisions regarding retirement. Representatives will be able to assist with questions regarding retirement, insurance, financial planning, social security and Medicare.
