August Employees of the Month
Karen Brown, MUSC Behavioral Health North, Institute of Psychiatry
Applause Recognition: Excellence in going the extra mile in customer satisfaction. “Karen, her husband and children redecorated our playroom in August with her children donating a toy playhouse, toy kitchen center, motorcycle, books, puzzles, and kitchen toys. The playroom is now interactive, colorful and friendly for our clients.”

Linda Faircloth, Meducare
Applause Recognition: “A patient in pain was transported from Transitional Care Unit to MUSC for testing and Linda was the EMT who accompanied her.  Linda stayed beyond her shift, clocked out to help care for and transported this patient to MUSC. A bed assignment came about two hours later and Linda helped take the patient to the floor and get her settled, all off the clock.”

August Physicians of the Month
Mark Wagner, M.D., Psychiatry
“I came to the Star Ladson program  June 14, and both registered nurses were stuck in a traffic tie up.  When I told Dr. Wagner this information, he quickly stepped up to give the morning medication to the children so that they would have the best chance to have a good day.  He was wrapping things up to catch a flight out of town, but took the time to help us provide excellent care to our patients and give them the best chance for success. He is always such a great team player and I have never worked with a better doctor! You will never hear Dr. Wagner say, ‘That’s not my job.’”

Robert Stuart, M.D., Oncology
“I have encountered Dr. Stuart in various settings and situations and, without exception, he proves to be not only an outstanding physician but also an excellent teacher.  His integrity as a doctor and the depth of care he has for his patients, as well as his strong collaborative interaction with others in the medical field” are noted in several examples provided in this nomination.

Nestor Esnaola, M.D., Surgical Oncology
“Dr. Esnaola spent long hours with our family explaining everything about my sister-in-law’s cancer, including drawing pictures. He held her hand and reassured her and a family in panic mode.  He would call me at work and answer questions and his staff truly models his behavior.  What an incredible place to work! I feel like Dr. Esnaola saved her life and for that we are truly grateful.  He is an incredible doctor and MUSC is lucky to have physicians of his caliber.  My sister-in-law wanted me to think of a way we could thank Dr. Esnaola and I couldn’t think of a better way than nominating him for the Monthly Magnetic MD.”

Communication board quarterly audits
Communication boards with MUSC Excellence information related to the pillar goals are being audited this week. Because of the great job that the board liaisons (those responsible for posting monthly updated to the boards) have done, audits of communication boards will be done quarterly—as long as the medical center keeps up the good work.

Organizational information for posting on the boards and sharing in staff meetings is available at http://mcintranet.musc.edu/muscexcellence/communicating.htm.

October Benefit of the Month: “No Flu—It’s up to you” Campaign
Vaccines will be available beginning in October with multiple clinics scheduled with times posted on the intranet. Look for information on communication boards beginning Oct. 1.

October Standard of the Month continues with the 10/5 Challenge. Remember—Make eye contact and smile at 10’. Say hello at 5’.
