Dietetic interns experience performance improvement

Dietetic intern, Paul Borer, writes report of PI project with guidance from Mary Basel, nutrition manager.

MUSC’s Department of Medicine sponsors an experienced-based internship program to prepare students for the national registered examination for dieticians and for entry-level practice as registered dietitians.

Accredited by the American Dietetic Association (ADA), MUSC's nine-and-a-half month program was developed following a study of South Carolina's health care organizations. The study indicated that there were more jobs than qualified dietitians.

As part of the clinical nutrition management rotation, students develop a Performance Improvement (PI) project under the guidance of Mary Basel, MNS. In their report, the student identifies a problem, an evaluation is performed and the facts are summarized. Upon completion the report is presented to the clinical nutrition staff. To participate in the program, students must have a bachelor’s or master's degree from an ADA approved program.
