Department of Managed Care business development manager Victor Smith got a taste of public attitudes about MUSC recently, and he likes it.

“The response was overwhelming,” Smith said about attendance at a Robert Bosch employee health fair Oct. 16 and 17. He described clusters of Bosch employees asking questions, picking up literature and participating in free vision and glaucoma screenings and respiratory tests.

Carolina Family Care, the Storm Eye Institute’s Magill Laser Center and MUSC’s Respiratory Therapy Department staffed displays and screened participants. Other local hospitals and health care providers were represented as well.

Bosch’s Charleston plant nurse, Janice Brown, organized the health fair and called the MUSC team “awesome. They did so much for me. We worked them a little hard, and they didn’t whine a bit,” she said with a laugh. She said about 2,000 people attended the fair.

Comments Brown has heard since the fair have expressed how really impressed both Bosch employees and management were with what the MUSC team did for them. Smith said MUSC was about the only participant at the fair that performed actual health checks and screenings.

“We have a number of employees here with diabetes,” Brown said, “and the eye exams along with good education information about diabetes and the importance of taking care of their eyes was especially beneficial. We were impressed.”

Smith said the MUSC team found no employees with glaucoma or lung problems, but did refer five for corrective laser eye surgery. Bosch is one company that is actively interested in keeping its employees healthy, he said.
