Hutson named Family Physician of the Year

Arthur C. Hutson Jr., M.D., has been named the 1997 Family Physician of the Year by the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians. He will be honored on Nov. 14 at the 49th Annual Scientific Assembly of the academy in the Westin Resort hotel on Hilton Head.

Hutson joined the Department of Family Medicine in February 1971, one year after its inception. Since then, he has been instrumental in developing programs to enhance the practice of family medicine within MUSC and South Carolina.

A proven role model and leader, Hutson served on numerous organizations and committees. Within the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians, Hutson is on the Resident and Student Affairs Committee. In 1991 Hutson was named the chair of the Department of Family Medicine. On Oct. 1, he relinquished this position to William J. Hueston, M.D. He continues as a professor in the department. Hutson has also served as director of a wide range of MUSC extension programs designed to expand educational opportunities for family physicians throughout South Carolina.

In honoring Hutson, the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians “applauds” his commitment and service in the assurance of quality education for family physicians throughout South Carolina.
