Family Medicine chair steps down
by Margo Frazier, Public Relations

After six years as chairman of the Department of Family Medicine, Arthur C. Hutson, M.D., said farewell, as he relinquished his position to William Hueston, M.D. He continues as an attending physician for the residency program and retains his professorship.

Hutson will teach Introduction to Clinical Medicine and Introduction to Reason. To show their appreciation, approximately 150 friends and co-workers held a banquet in Hutson’s honor. He was presented with a ‘Southern Splendor’ print by Jim Booth as a symbol of his love for the Lowcountry.

Even though he feels a certain emptiness inside, age was the reason for Hutson’s decision. “I am 66 years old, 60 when I accepted the position, I felt it was long enough.” He continues, “Being a chair requires a lot of energy, I don’t have the energy it requires.”

Hutson is one of the original faculty members in the Department of Family Medicine. In February of 1971 he came on as an assistant professor, one year after the department’s inception. For 28 years, Hutson was appointed to numerous positions and was a member of many university and community organizations.

In 1991, he and Layton McCurdy, M.D., dean of the College of Medicine, negotiated a five-year contract which McCurdy extended until a qualified replacement was found. Now that Hueston has replaced him, Hutson advises him to be “bold and imaginative in improving the academic approach to Family Medicine.”
