Student Research Day '97

On Nov. 7, students showcased their research projects during Student Research Day ‘97.

More than 100 students participated in this event that was designed to allow students to sharpen their presentation skills by mimicking a national scientific meeting. Students competed in oral and poster presentations.

This year’s keynote lecture, “Does the Immune System Really Discriminate Between Self and Non-Self,” was presented by Polly Matzinger, M.D., of the National Institutes of Health. The sponsors for the event were: all six colleges, MUSC president James B. Edwards, Environmental Hazards Assessment Program, MUSC Graduate Alumni Association, Health Sciences Foundation and Glaxo-Wellcome.

A team of judges evaluated each of the 18 categories based on scientific content and matter, clarity and quality of delivery and the handling of questions. In each category, a first prize of $500 and a second prize of $200 was awarded.

The first place winners were: Deanna E. Conners, Carissa Schmidt, Brianne Gorod, Todd Harris, Diane LaRoche, Sherry R. Crowe, Antoine Makhlouf, Lana Cook, Amy Lewis, Alema Galijatovic, Thomas Papen-brock, Dwayne Dove, Linda Sugg, Richard Wagren, Kim Huffman, Yi Huang, Lan Jin and Ekaterina Mantrova.

The second place winners were: Keith Daniel Brauss, Jessica Manaker, Dean Sproles, Ann Cheri Fox, Christopher Robinson, Taetia J. Phillips, Sajeevani Gunasinghe, Kristy Young, Mark Rubinstein, Bryce Nelson, Martin Laser, Christopher Liberatos, S.B. Kribbs, Dana Finley, Vijaykumar S. Kasi, Lauren E. Ball, Marc Hyer and Guangyu Wu.
