Lowcountry seniors festival targets lifestyle

What can I do to stay healthy? Is it too late for me to learn about computers? How can I get a job after I retire? How can I financially plan for retirement and my family?

As you reach your prime years, more and more questions about your changing lifestyle and priorities need answering. From Jan. 23 to Jan. 25, seniors’ primary concerns will be addressed at Charleston’s Primetime Festival, the annual Lowcountry seniors festival.

Psychologist, Dr. Joyce Brothers, and Dr. Barry Sears, author of “The Zone” and “Mastering the Zone,” will join other local and national experts in delivering a variety of senior-related seminars and feature presentations. During the two and a half day period, three main topic categories— lifestyles, health care and financial planning/legal issues—will be covered.

Seniors will learn how to surf the Information Highway, what's ahead for health care and how to benefit from the new tax law. As an added bonus this year, free copies of Taking Care of Today and Tomorrow—a resource guide for health, aging and long-term care—and Dr. Joyce Brothers’ book, “The Practical Plan for Liking Yourself Better,” will be given to all Primetime participants. To supplement the seminars, the Primetime Festival will serve as a prime spot to socialize and meet others.

A special wine and cheese reception will be held on Friday evening, Jan. 23, and social breaks gives participants the opportunity to join in an aerobic walk or take advantage of the charms of the Historic District with new friends. Registration is limited.

A fee of $20 includes all Primetime Festival sessions, aerobic walk and reception on Friday, and box lunch on Saturday. All events will be held on the College of Charleston campus. For more information, call (803) 805-3006.

Dr. Barry Sears, author of The Zone and Mastering the Zone

Should we treat food as if it were a drug? Can diet control hormonal response? Dr. Barry Sears, a leading authority in the field of drug delivery systems and dietary control of hormonal responses will address this new way of thinking about nutrition in his Primetime Festival lecture “Your Diet Zones: Are They Healthy?” on Saturday, Jan. 24. Sears’ book “The Zone” has sold more than 1 million copies.

His newest book, “Mastering the Zone,” further accelerated this revolutionary understanding of how food controls very powerful hormonal effects, thus elevating diet beyond simply being a source of calories.

Dr. Joyce Brothers to present positive thinking

Each of us has something we don’t like about ourself. We may be too abrasive, too shy or too critical. We either can’t say yes, or can’t say no. We’re too impulsive or too conservative. Whatever the trait may be, Dr. Joyce Brothers says, “it has the power to hold one back from enjoying real happiness and success.”

On Friday, Jan. 23, as part of the Primetime Festival, Brothers will present “Positive Thinking for Positive Health.” After the presentation, Primetime Festival participants can have Brothers autograph their complimentary copies of her latest book, Positive Plus: The Practical Plan for Liking Yourself Better.
