S.T.A.E. Fit program aims to shape up seniors

The next session of the Harper Student Center senior exercise program will begin just in time to get ready for fall. The classes will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Harper Student Center beginning Aug. 11.

Designed specifically for retired adults and dubbed the "S.T.A.E. Fit" program, it is based on the latest research involving exercise and senior adults. This program combines strength training and aerobic exercise (S.T.A.E.) as well as flexibility exercises.

Periodic classroom sessions will also be offered, covering such topics as nutrition, stress management, health care issues, and information on other issues that affect senior adults.

The class will last for 12 weeks and will include a fitness assessment prior to starting the class, and again at the end of the 12th week.

A water aerobics class specifically designed for the S.T.A.E. Fit group was added to the program this summer and will continue this fall. These sessions will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginners are encouraged to exercise three days per week, and never more than two days in a row, depending on your fitness level.

The class will be open to individuals 50 years of age and older, who are free from disease or injury which may restrict participation (physician's clearance to participate in this program is required). This program is not for rehabilitation or physical therapy purposes. It is intended to keep senior adults physically active and healthy, preventing injury, improving the quality of life, and making daily activities easier.

The program is free to members of the Harper Student Center, however, the cost for non-members is $125. Class size is limited to 20 participants and registration forms can be obtained at the Harper Student Center If the class is not full, late registration is will be accepted.
